Alabama Licensure (Act 2002-517) Requires individuals performing home inspections to become licensed by the Alabama Building Commission. Alabama has established Home Inspectors Rules and Applications. The Building Commission has adopted the National Home Inspection Examination to assess minimum competence. The bill also outlines educational and experiential requirements to become licensed, sets license fees and insurance requirements, and defines penalties under which licensure may be suspended or revoked. This law replaces Act 96-574.

While the State of Alabama does not require a specific curricula of study for those wishing to become a licensed home inspector, the State does require all applicants to prepare for and pass the "National Home Inspector Examination" and to meet the educational and experience requirements as determined by the Building Commission.
The National Home Inspector Exam measures the required knowledge of the applicant to perform home inspections at the novice level. Measurement covers topics of residential inspection information which includes a general knowledge of building codes. Inspection level technical knowledge and inspection protocols for each of the following major topics: structures, electrial systems and components, heating systems and components, cooling systems and components, plumbing systems and components, interior surfaces, fixtures and appliances, exterior surfaces, roofing, flashings, solid fuel burning appliances and fireplaces, building site and grounds, etc.

| Here is some good news. Because Alabama does not requiring a specific course curricula of study, you are free to take only the course topics that you really need in order to complete your home inspector education and pass the National Home Inspector Examination.
Most people that are entering this field will have strong education or work experience in one or more topics that home inspectors need to know. There are few people that have the broad scope of background required to simply take the National Home Inspector Examination and pass.
